It hasn’t quite felt like summer in New Hampshire this year. We have had many rainy days and cool weather. But, the sun has been shining more often in these final weeks and we’ve been making the most of it! Outside of working we do a lot of resting, though we still have fun.

Bartlett is a small town, an only one traffic light type of small. But there is still plenty to do! Living here these last 10 weeks has been a nice change of pace. I’ve had a lot of fun this summer exploring and hanging out with the crew.

One Sunday we took a trip to Portland, Maine to check out the city. We went to the Museum of Art, looked around many cute shops, got some delicious donuts (made with mashed potatoes!!), and checked out the Bug Light (aka the Portland Breakwater Light (house)).

I packed in a lot my final weekend. Saturday, Erica and I hiked Mt. Willard in Crawford Notch State Park. The trail was only 3.1 miles round trip and had a great view. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ – I’d recommend going. Then we headed to the covered bridge gift shop.

Sunday, I finally did a run on the dirt road in the national forest after working there all summer. Jake came along and we almost made it to C7 (much easier to drive). After our run, I braved the cold water and swam in the river which I regret not doing more often this summer. To top off the weekend we had a MELNHE BBQ Palooza. We did some tie-dying and had some good food on the grill!

We had a small crew of 5 this summer and lots going on. After living together all summer, we said our goodbyes 🙁. It was such a good experience living in a new place, meeting new people, trying new foods and being able to help with/learn about different MELNHE projects! Definitely a summer to remember!

Hi!

This summer I’ve been hanging out in NH with the MELNHE crew! We spent the first two weeks fertilizing, and it was nice to learn about this process and be introduced to our stands before starting projects. In the following few weeks, I successfully completed a coarse woody debris survey in all 13 stands! This was a very fun experience and I even got to present my findings at the Hubbard Brook Meeting. After my data was collected, I spent my days helping Erin collect her samples, doing some stem mapping with Lindsay, and helping Jake with soil respiration. It’s definitely fun to be involved in other projects and see what everyone else is up to this summer.

Apart from the field work, I’ve really enjoyed living in NH with the crew. I’ve gotten to strengthen my cooking skills, watch some new shows, and explore Bartlett and North Conway.

It was always super fun and exciting to find little friends in the woods, here are some of my favorites:

This internship has been an amazing experience and was a perfect way to spend my summer!
